Fissure Sealants

To help prevent tooth decay, newly erupted back teeth can have fissure sealants placed on them. A sealant is a thin film which covers the fissure (groove) in the tooth to help stop bacteria getting in and causing cavities.  Fissure sealants also make it easier to clean the biting surfaces of teeth as the grooves are covered with a smoother surface.

Some patients are more susceptible to tooth decay and resulting cavities and may be prescribed a toothpaste with a higher concentration of fluoride than normal toothpastes.  The dentist may also advise to use a fluoride mouthwash after brushing teeth. With regular visits we can also put a fluoride varnish on the teeth to help make them stronger. This is particularly important for children's teeth and patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.
