Oral cancer

Oral cancer can present in many forms and is caused by a variety of factors, mainly smoking, alcohol and viruses.

Dentists have a key role in early detection of oral cancer and over 300 cases are diagnosed each year in Ireland.  Good oral hygiene is very important in maintaining healthy teeth.  Giving up smoking, reducing your alcohol intake and eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day all help to prevent oral cancer.

If you do notice any changes in your mouth-ulcers that do not heal with 3 weeks, white marks, lumps and bumps, hardened tissue or anything unusual you should attend your dentist who can advise if further investigation is needed.

Visit your dentist every 6 months for a check up even if you wear dentures as oral cancer can develop even if you have no teeth.
